Plantar Fasciitis & Ankle Pain Specialist – Located in Richmond VA
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia, a ligament on the bottom of the foot, becomes degenerative or inflamed secondary to structural issues in the lower extremity. Some of these structural issues include flatfeet, high-arched feet, or tight calf muscles.
What are common symptoms?
- Tenderness to heel or arch of the foot
- Heel pain worse in the morning when first stepping out of bed
- Heel pain after activity
What are treatment options?
Rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medications are initial treatments patients may try at home. However, when pain persists, you should consult a foot and ankle specialist.
Physical therapy is often a crucial part of treating plantar fasciitis. Your physician can also give a corticosteroid injection to help with symptoms.
Sometimes an MRI scan may be utilized to confirm diagnosis. In rare instances, surgical intervention consisting of ligament or tendon releases may be performed.
At G2 Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, we will review non-surgical treatment options for foot pain with you and only recommend surgery if absolutely needed.
