Foot & Ankle Fracture -Treatment Options Richmond VA
Fractures in the foot and ankle can be caused by overuse or trauma.
What are some common types of fractures in the foot and ankle?
- Lisfranc Fracture (fracture of the midfoot)- can occur directly through trauma such as heavy objects landing directly to the midfoot. It can also occur indirectly through activity and sports
- Jones fracture (fracture of the of the fifth metatarsal)- commonly occurs in sports such as basketball or tennis while making a quick change in direction. Due to the poor bone healing in this area, surgery may be discussed sooner especially in athletes
- Calcaneus fracture (fracture of the heel bone)- commonly occurs from fall from height
- Ankle fracture (fracture of one or more of the ankle bones)- can occur from rolling your ankle or blunt trauma. Surgical intervention depends on the stability of the ankle joint
What are treatment options?
Treatment options often depend on multiple factors such as amount of fracture displacement, a patient’s level of activity and overall health, etc. Further imaging such as MRI or CT scans are sometimes ordered to assess for further assessment of the fracture site and surrounding tissue damage.
It is important to discuss with your surgeon the options after a fracture is identified. In some instances, fractures may be treated with a cast and crutches. In other instances, surgical reduction and fixation may be the best course for you.
