Achilles Tendon Pathology
Achilles tendinitis, or inflammation of the Achilles tendon, can occur from overuse, tightness of the calf muscle, bone spurring or even certain medications. When patients develop Achilles tendinitis, treatment options are typically physical therapy, rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medications.
Long-standing Achilles tendinitis may lead to an Achilles tendon rupture. Other causes of Achilles tendon rupture include gout, corticosteroid use or direct trauma.
What are symptoms of an Achilles tendon rupture?
- Sudden onset of pain
- Popping or snapping sound
- Feeling of kicked in the heel or calf
- Inability to bend foot downward
How is an Achilles tendon rupture diagnosed?
- A careful history emphasizing mechanism of injury with a good physical examination performed by your physician
- An MRI scan may be required to assess the extent of damage
What are treatment options?
Incomplete tears identified on MRI may be treated initially with early rehabilitation and in some instances may require surgical repair. Although non-surgical and surgical approaches exist for Achilles tendon ruptures, it is dependent on each patient and his or her goals.
